4th of July Weekend

This past 4th of July weekend, Ben and I went to Savannah.  I figured Ben would like Savannah since it’s an old southern city.  I think he liked it, it looked a lot like the downtown area of his hometown.

We stayed at a bed & breakfast in the historic district.  It was called The Dresser Palmer House.  I thought this b&b would be a nice change of pace from places like the Hyatt and it was a better way to experience the city.  The people that worked there were extremely nice and helpful.  Breakfast was always amazing!  I kind of looked forward to that more than anything else.  At nights, they had a wine & cheese social.  We didn’t really talk to the other guests.  They were all older and we pretty much could’ve been their kids.  But I did get my grub on with all those cheeses.

We did a LOT of walking around.  Since it was 4th of July weekend, Savannah was extra packed and congested with cars.  We walked pretty much everywhere.  It wasn’t that bad.  Our b&b was about a mile and a half away from the river front.  We did the usual touristy things:  walked the river front and took a trolley tour of the historic district.

Savannah has some great restaurants too.  I took Ben to Fiddler’s Crab House.  I went there last year with my family and we had awesome seafood.  Ben got a low country boil and I got the crab cake sandwich.  They were both really good dishes.

We wanted to go to Mrs. Wilkes, but we got into town on Friday late and it was already closed.  They’re only open M-F too.  So we settled for Paula Dean’s restaurant, Lady and Sons.  Just to put your name on the list, the line was down the block.  Once you put your name on the list, they gave you a time to come back to eat.  When we got there, we waited in line for about 3o minutes.  We had finished our awesome breakfast about two hours before getting there, so we figured we’ll get a table for lunch time.  Nope.  It was either eat right then or come back at 9 pm.  We decided to eat right then since we already had dinner plans.  We did the buffet.  It had fried chicken, ribs, collards, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, watermelon, beans, etc.  It was good.  I’m pretty sure that Ben’s family could whip all those things up and it would be better.

One night, we had dinner at The Olde Pink House.  I wish that this place enforced some kind of a dress code.  There were too many tourists in there dressed in shorts and flip flops.  Nevertheless, the food was great!  Ben and I both got the flounder.  The flounder came out whole and scored to make eating it easier.  Antoine’s in New Orleans is still my favorite fancy restaurant though.  The Olde Pink House is on the fancy restaurant list only because of the flounder.

Saturday was the 4th.  At 5 pm, we still had not decided on a place to eat and knew that everywhere would be packed.  We also wanted to make sure we could eat and make it to the river front for the fireworks.  We asked David, the inn keeper at our b&b, for recommendations.  He not only recommended us a fantastic restaurant but got us last minute reservations.  David got us reservations at Boar’s Head, which is right on the river front.  We got a table by the window and had a great view of the river while we ate.  We got barbecued shrimp (wrapped in bacon) for an appetizer and Ben got a soup (I don’t remember what kind).  For the main course, Ben got a steak (rib-eye I think….my memory is not as good as it used to be) and I got the low-country bouillabaisse.  That was the first time I’ve ever had bouillabaisse and it was terrific!!  The broth was good and it was jam-packed with seafood.

We made it out of the restaurant before the fireworks started.  The fireworks show was decent.  Of course, I’m spoiled by the Boston 4th of July fireworks show.  After the fireworks, we went to Leopold’s Ice Cream.  They had yummy ice cream :)

I’ll post some pictures from the trip real soon.  You can check out some of the pictures that are to the right.  But I’ll post a couple of pictures of us in Savannah.

NOLA again

For the Fourth of July weekend, I went to New Orleans.  I needed my hurricane fix.  I just did some gambling, a lot of eating, and some drinking.

I feel like NOLA has lost its luster, for me.  Maybe it had something to do with how crowded it was because of the holiday weekend, the jazz festival, and Essence music festival.  I could not enjoy the city as much and the hurricanes got sweeter and less strong.  I was kind of disappointed.

Ben and I went to Antoine’s again.  It is still my favorite restaurant in New Orleans.  I was happy that we did not have to sit in the front dining room again.  I wish we had Cedric for a waiter again, our waiter this time was okay.  I got a platter of oysters prepared three different ways.  I cannot remember the names of them, but when I do I will update this post.  The oysters were delish and so was the gumbo I got for an appetizer.  I got the grilled soft shell crab with almonds.  That was good, considering it was my first time eating soft shell crab.  I did not know you can eat the whole thing–shell and all.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention.  We drove to NOLA in Jenn’s Jeep, we lost a fender somewhere along the way and got a flat tire about 10 minutes outside of NOLA.  I will post up some pictures of the trip in a bit.
